Import penetration decreased for five consecutive years from 2007 to 2011. There was a slight 0.2% increase for 2012 to 69.4% from 69.2% in 2011. Import penetration for 2013 continues to remain below 70%.
One of the main reasons of the decrease has been the new factories that the Italians have opened in USA soil in the past couple of years.

What it will be interesting to see if the gap gets narrower or if it stops there due to the higher costs of China. The top 3 import countries have a 77.245 market share and the top 5 have an 87.5% market share.

On a dollar basis, Italy remains the number one exporter to the USA year to date 2nd Qtr 2013 with a 34.7% market share and China was second with a 23.9% market share. Mexico was third with a 18.7% market share. These top 3 countries make 77.3% of the total market share in US dollars.
