I had a few months back a very interesting conversation with one Chinese business man. In part of this conversation he mentioned that it was better to do things alone or by himself than with a group of business partners investors. That a single person was like a dragon and a group of people just would be like a can of worms. It was interesting to hear that and all his different points of view and the reasons why he felt that it was better to do things that way. This comments immediately reminded me of a story that I heard many times when I was younger related to “A can of worms” and somewhat related to his comments. The story was about a man that goes fishing with a friend. The friend notices that he had with him two cans of worms. One was open and the other was closed.
And he asked his friend: Why one can is open and the other one closed? And he replied: Well see one can (The open one) has Mexican Worms and the closed one has Japanese Worms. And why is that replied the friend? And the answer that he gave him explains why this Chinese entrepreneur businessman sees better to work by himself than with a group of investors. And the answer was as follows: See the Japanese can is closed because the worms work as a team and help each other to try to escape from the can. And the other can I do not have a need to close it because it has Mexican worms. Some of these worms will try to get out of the can but the others won’t let them and will pull them back to the can.I used Japanese and Mexican but in reality it is just to exemplify the difference and we could have used different countries or names or groups.
In real life the same exact thing happens. When there is a group of people trying to accomplish something but there are no goals, no leader, no rules, no common interest, lots of egos, individual interests, every person trying to do what is better for them, envy, etc. if it is like this then it is better to things alone. This explains the group of worms with the lid open.On the other hand it could be the opposite. If this group is well led, has a common goal, there are rules, egos are set aside, a common interest, etc., I strongly believe that has a better chance of success than a single person. “Two heads think better than one”
One person alone can’t know absolutely everything, can’t supervise everything, decide everything, be everywhere, etc.Nevertheless there are many things that at times we have to do better by ourselves.
