There is a tale in the western world about this topic that I always enjoy sharing. The story is about a street beggar that frequented a bar-restaurant to try to get some money for his main needs to be able to survive.
This place was usually visited by a group of friends that after a few drinks always enjoyed making fun and laugh about this person when he came to their table to beg from some money.
Every single time he came to the table to ask for money or help these friends always played the same trick or joke on him.
They would put three different coins on the table a big coin that had the least value (Let’s say 20 RMB) a mid-size coin with value of 30 RMB and a very small one but with value of 50 RMB.
These friends believed that this person was un-educated and also because of his looks (Dirty and skinny) and obviously because he was begging for money they all though was very stupid.
And not only because of these looks but also because every single time that they visited this place the beggar would be around and go to their table and these friends would put the three coins over the table and would tell the guy to pick only one coin. And every single time he would pick the biggest one. This made these friends laugh every time.
They played the same game with him many times over. Every single time they went to this bar. They all said that this guy must be an idiot because he always picked the same big coin believing that had the most value.
A Good Samaritan that also went to this bar saw these multiple times and though that what there were doing to this beggar was not nice. So after seeing these 2 or 3 times he went to talk to the beggar.
He told him: Why every time you go to their table you pick the big coin? Don’t you know that the big coin has the least value? These guys think you are an idiot. They think that you don’t know anything, and they make fun out of you.
The beggar replied to him: I know very well that the big coin has the least value. I also know that they laugh and make fun of me and that they enjoy that. But I also know very well that the moment I pick the small coin this game will be over and I will not get my 20 RMB big coin every day.
He finished by making this comment: It is better to look stupid and be smart than to think that you are smart person and be a perfect idiot.
The Good Samaritan was speechless after he heard this.
Looks can be deceiving; you may be surprised often if you stereotype a person.
In my next article I will write some true stories about western people that come to China to do business and are perfect examples of this. I bet you will laugh and enjoy these stories a lot because not only they were real but also because you were probably were involved in similar situations.
