Be Somebody Who Makes Everyone Feel Like Somebody
I remember like if it was yesterday my first day at work. I couldn’t sleep very well the night before the first big day at my new job. Even knowing well some of the people that already was working there, a few managers. The other 1000 or so people I have never seen before, and I didn’t know a single person.
I was going to work in the factory where I didn’t know anyone. Honestly, I was nervous but not petrified, like many people do when they go to their first day at a new job. Usually you have no clear idea what to do, where to go, and whom to meet. You don’t know how the working environment is, or how your boss is going to be like. My personal experience during this process went quite well to be honest with you, but for most others many times simply does not; I survived!
Later, things start getting better and better, you start meeting different people some of which you get along with, some that work with you but are not so close and even difficult people. I have seen it all in the almost 35 years I have been working for the same company. I perfectly have learned and understand how important it is that first day or week at work, and now as a manager I am the first person that because of my position as the leader of the company I set the example by welcoming the person, breaking the ice and making the new employee feel comfortable fast with the group.
Most people, leaders or bosses simply take this very lightly and don’t pay the necessary attention to this delicate matter. It is many times the reason some people don’t even last or survive the first week or two in their new jobs.
But when it is your first day at work and your new manager comes to you, with a big smile on his or her face and says to you:
“Hi. I am Humberto, your manager. We would be working together. Come, I’ll introduce you to our team members and brief you about what you would be doing here”. From introducing you to others to inviting you to have lunch together the first day, your new boss did everything to drive away your first-day jitters and anxiety at work.
The generosity and caring attitude must continue until it is your last day at that company. You as a leader must be nice to everyone, not just a person or two.
People, new employees might not remember every word you said as the boss that first day, but I can assure you will remember how he or she made you feel that first day. People will always remember how you covered their mistakes, people will remember how you encourage them, giving them constructive feedback, pushing them to take difficult projects, and leading many others the same way at the office.
Later in life in the future, when you look back, you will remember your boss as somebody who made everyone feel like somebody. And that’s the biggest leadership lesson I can give you.
You as the boss must make the workplace a better place for all in every single aspect. This is what make superb leaders but also amazing human beings.
Isn’t that a great way to be remembered for?
I will not be impressed by your position, job title, the car you drive, the size of your home or the money you have, but I will be impressed on how you treat others!
