Daltile & Marazzi Update
1. It has been officially announced the acquisition of Marazzi by Daltile-Mohawk Group in December 20. So it is not a secret anymore and it is official.
2. Mohawk signed a binding definitive agreement to acquire the whole Marazzi Group. The transaction will remain in process and it is expected to occur late first quarter of 2013.
3. So what does this means to all of us manufacturers and distributors of ceramic tile in China?
4. As maybe some of you know Marazzi a few months ago closed most of their offices and stop all activities related to their effort in selling Italian Made or Made in China products using their brand name which is very well know world-wide.
5. On the other hand we have Daltile that has a partner in China (Sanfi). I am not sure but it seemed to some of us in the industry that this partnership was primarily focused on manufacturing tile in China at Sanfi’s facilities and exporting these goods to USA or Mexico to be commercialized there in their stores.
6. So how will these affect Dal-Tile’s strategy towards the Chinese market? Would it Change? Would it remain the same? It will be very interesting to find out. I guess time will let us know.
7. The only thing I can tell you for sure at this moment is that this new acquisition will make Mohawk the big monster of our industry world-wide with huge presence in Italy, USA, Mexico, Russia, France and China and at least twice bigger than the next big competitor.
8. Anyway, to remain more or less in the same channel this event clearly show us that when it may be difficult times for some companies with this tough economy it is also a good time for some other companies that may be doing better even with this recession.
9. Italy and Spain are suffering big time with this extremely difficult economy and like I said in previeous articles they have slowed down or closed at least 40% to 50% of their installed capacity. For Marazzi it may not have been the best for them to have sold the full company to Mohawk. At least I am saying this from the bottom of their hearts. It must have been a very difficult decision to have let go something that they work so hard for and for all these 50 plus years. But they knew that it had to be done now otherwise it would have been too late maybe and later have to shut down instead.
